June 24 – Fundraiser Event – To End the Stigma of Addiction

About a year ago, a young man came to our front door talking about this organization he belonged, called Shatterproof.  He was an addict, sober at the moment and wanting to get the word out about this amazing organization that worked to eliminate the stigma of addiction, so we could talk about it.

At the time, one of our best friends, who lived in the back house at 709 Rita St, was living with her son Destry and his addiction.  I listened to the young man at my door.  He spoke clearly and was passionate about what he was describing.  And I understood.  There is a huge stigma against those who are addicted.  Because of this perception that addicts are bad people, we stay clear and we don’t talk about it.  This lack of communication and sense of isolation only fuels the addiction.

I wanted to help so I wrote a check and gave the young man at my door all my contact information to forward onto Shatterproof.  I told him I was proud of him and wished him luck.

Eight months later our friend’s son Destry overdosed just before his 21st birthday.  His death is the saddest thing I have ever experienced.  No one will ever be the same, especially his mother.  Rachel cries every day.  She wants her son back!

I feel a great sense of responsibility to ensure we all understand that people who are addicted are first and foremost people.  Everyone needs people to talk with, to be heard and to hear, to feel understood.  That means reaching out and starting a conversation and not being afraid.

So here we are at this Shatterproof Rise Up Against Addiction fundraiser 5k run/walk event coming up very soon Sunday June 24.  I setup a team called Team 709 Rita St to run/walk in honor of Destry to make some money toward eliminating the stigma surrounding addiction.

The run/walk is Sunday June 24 in Los Angeles.  It would be great to walk with you.  Or, you may simply donate a few bucks to this great cause.

Love you all!!

A Poem: She the Ocean

I often spend time at the beach, reading and/or writing.  I wrote the poem below in February 2018 whilst enjoying the sunset during another session of deep contemplation.

She the Ocean

Roar she goes up the sand embankment
Mischievous and inviting at the same time
Her waves curl, pushing through the scary
She has seen enough skin for one day
I like her juices, her tides her wrinkles
Big toes bury themselves under the blanket of the sea
Urgency does not matter here
She welcomes those who circle back
Plenty of glass to polish those who teeter too far
Walk by and listen to the sound of her careless wind
Her breath covers our lashes with salt
The taste leaves us hungry for more
Inside she lectures no one
We are all monumental nobodies
She is open, varied and free of discrimination
I like her jewelry
She accessorizes well
She will allow a modern float to enhance recreation or to save those who try
Dead wood, empty shells and porous gemstones land from shore to garden overnight
I like souvenirs
Look straight into the sun as it sets across her breasts
She feels the pain beside us
Our blindness gives her strength
We may not let it go

In Search of Golf Attire for Today’s Woman

For those of us gals over 5’8″ who weigh over 150 pounds, who love to play golf and look as good as we strive to play, we seek a line of golf attire that:

  1. Fits our bodies
  2. Is functional
  3. Looks great
  4. Is affordable

Michelle Wie, the Korda sisters, Paula Creamer, Lexi Thompson.  They’re all tall professional golfers.  And they look spectacular on the golf course.  It helps that they are all slim and make a good amount of money (still not anywhere near as much as the men make but that’s a separate blog perhaps in the near future).  I have seen them in person and as much as I admire their golf game, I also appreciate how good they look in their golf clothes.  Where do they get their golf attire?

I buy my long pants from the men’s section of the sporting goods store or golf shop.  Nike has a pair of stretchy Bermuda shorts that I love that also work for tennis.  However, they only come in black, grey, white and tan.  As far as tops, once I find the one or two racks of women’s golf clothing, I see the same styles over and over.

My friend and I met Brittany Lincicome in April 2018 just after her 2nd round at the Wilshire Country Club.  That’s me on the left.  My friend Tanya on the right.  Brittany looks great in her loose-fitting top and snug long pants.   Where does Brittany Lincicome shop?

Designers!  Get it together!  Check out the golf courses around the world (well, those in So Cal anyway) and talk with the women in the plain baggie clothing.  I betcha they would love to wear something different, something fun, with bright colors, fitted, but not too fitted (we need to ensure not to emphasize the roll(s)), and functional.  Oh – and affordable.  What’s so hard about that?!!

Please contact me here.  I’ll buy the first round (of drinks).
